Management and administration

Mark Johnson

Principal

Mark Johnson received his Master's Degree in School Administration in 2010 and has more than 25 years of experience working with young people in a variety of educational settings. His first experience in education came when he worked for three years as the director of the University of Florida's youth programme. For the next 12 years, he taught science to children in grades 6-8 in the USA. He was awarded "Teacher of the Year" there. For the past 10 years, he has been the principal of an IB school in Berlin, developing bilingual primary and secondary education for an international community of students.

Portrait of Nadine Werner

Nadine Werner

Head nursery

Nadine Werner is already very familiar with Phorms Education. After successfully completing her teacher training in 2010, she worked for eight years as a primary school teacher at Phorms Campus Berlin Süd. During this time, she completed a number of further training courses, including one to become an integration educator, and her desire to move abroad grew. In the summer of 2018, she and her husband moved to Quito, Ecuador for four years, where she worked for three years in the kindergarten of the German School Quito. During her stay in Quito, she completed a distance learning course in "Nursery and Childcare Management" in August 2021. After returning from Ecuador in summer 2022 with a short excursion into the kindergarten landscape of the Berlin public sector, she decided to take on the exciting task of setting up the kindergarten at the Phorms Campus Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.

Portrait of Denise Szymanski

Denise Szymanski

Hort coordinator

Denise Szymanski is also very familiar with Phorms Education. In 2014, she successfully completed her studies in early childhood education at the Evangelische Fachhochschule Berlin and started at Phorms Berlin Süd the same year. Since joining Phorms as a teacher, she has completed further training to become a specialist integration educator, a trainee supervisor, on topics related to science in everyday life and child protection. From August 2023, she will take over as the head of the after-school care centre at the new Phorms Campus Berlin Prenzlauer Berg.

That makes us special

  • Bilingual days in the Nursery or lessons taught by native speakers
  • Children are at the centre of everything that we do!
  • Children can start in the nursery from 12 months onwards.
  • Committed, creative and international staff. Children take off in two languages!

Phorms' concept

Children and young people learn to understand the world: in its cultural and linguistic diversity, in its local characteristics and global contexts.

Children and young people learnt to understand the world

We are a community: we learn together and with mutual respect - and take the whole day to do so.

Our Primary School:

Bilingual education

Bilingual education

English and German are both equally important in the classroom and in every-day school life at our Phorms’ schools. Our students learn the languages through their teachers, teaching assistants and each other. They learn to move naturally in both languages. At the same time, they develop an understanding of other ways of life and values.

This is what our students learn from our native-speaking teachers. They experience English and live it themselves: in class, in the playground, at lunch, at parties and on excursions.

Differentiated learning

Differentiated learning

Each child is an individual. Our teachers observe every student carefully so that they can offer the best possible support. The time we gain from spending our day together is used to work more intensively with individual children and support their needs more closely.

Our students learn to trust their own skills and abilities more effectively and develop respect for the strengths and weaknesses of others.

Teachers and teaching assistants regularly work with small groups of students who are achieving learning outcomes either much more quickly or much more slowly than the rest of the class. Our aim is to provide an optimum standard of education by keeping class size low. At the moment, our class maximum for Primary School is 24.

Dedicated educators

Enthusiastic Teachers and Teaching Assistants

Motivation is infectious. Our teaching staff are enthusiastic pedagogues from all over the world. They enjoy working as part of a team, are open to developing new skills and always have time to listen to a child or parent if the need arises. Their commitment helps to ensure that our students enjoy attending school.

The careful selection of our teachers and educators is important to us and they bring a good understanding of the subjects they teach together with a high degree of pedagogical skill to our school. Our teachers are familiar with the latest teaching methods and base their lessons on German and international standards.

Our teachers continuously improve their teaching skills through local, national and international professional development and by attending conferences.

All-day community

Whole-day community

Phorms schools are whole day schools. Our students learn together – during lessons, at mealtimes and during the afternoon programme. Our students, parents and teachers not only see the school as a place of learning but value it as a place to spend time outside of lessons . Our students become part of the larger school community, by learning to share and assert their interests and to prove themselves.

Our qualified teaching staff are also able to provide whole-day care during the school holidays. Children take part in a whole range of exciting and challenging projects which provide them with an opportunity to make music, go on excursions, do handicrafts or learn about new sports.

Local roots

Local roots

The Berlin curriculum is the basis for our teaching. The highest educational qualification is the German Abitur. At the same time, we look beyond the national horizon and supplement our curricula with internationally recognised curricula, such as using the Cambridge Curriculum for English.

Our schools cooperate with social institutions, companies and universities. We provide our students with an understanding of local context in which they live, so that they can feel at home in the globalised world without forgetting their roots.

Local roots

Embracing Diversity

Our students embrace the diversity our community offers which includes persons of different cultural, religious and social backgrounds. This truly leaves its mark on our students. Phorms students respect the views of their fellow human beings and are able to deal with the beliefs of others in a constructive way.

The solidarity principle on which we operate is based on income-related fees in order to offer access to Phorms schools to children from different income groups.

Our school uniform creates a learning and social environment in which the main focus is on the community. This means that the children are able to develop independently of social origins and fashion trends.

Fluent in German and English from
Kindergarten or grade 1 onwards

The immersion method makes learning English child's play

Joining one of our bilingual primary schools is made simple, even for children without knowledge of a second language, thanks to the immersion method. Immersion means that students learn and experience both languages throughout the day.

They learn the new language as naturally as their native language - without any pressure or vocabulary stress. The immersive method places a great deal of emphasis on facial expressions and gestures. In this way, the children understand what is said in context and gradually incorporate the new language into their everyday speech.

Language learning is a fluid process

This is why the English and German languages are valued equally both in the classroom and in every day school life. Our students move naturally between both languages and at the same time, they develop an understanding of different ways of life and values.

It makes sense: teaching according to the immersion method

Our teachers teach the English language using the immersion method. Immersion means immersing yourself in a language with all your senses. Our English-speaking teachers supplement what is said with facial expressions and gestures, with pictures and symbols. In this way, students learn English faster, easier and more intensively.

Two languages double the competency: Lessons in German and English

Already in kindergarten, German and English-speaking teachers take care of the children. In elementary school, most of the lessons are held in English. In this way, our students acquire the language independently from concrete situations. In high school, they learn in roughly equal parts in German and English and thus acquire the relevant specialized vocabulary in both languages.

Lived language instead of just spoken language: native speaker educators

Being bilingual means more than just speaking two languages. It means being able to think and feel in both languages as well. This is what our students learn from our native-speaking educators. They experience English and live it themselves: in class, on the playground, at lunch, at celebrations and on field trips.

Two languages are just the beginning: More languages

Depending on the location, we offer Spanish, French and Latin as additional languages in the secondary schools. For Spanish and French, we also strive to have native-speaking teachers.

When STEM meets the Arts

Our bilingual primary school will also integrate STEAM into the curriculum and the after-school offers.
MIN(K)T area. When creativity and art meet STEM, the result is STE(A)M.

It is important to us to combine mathematical - scientific thinking with artistic creativity and artistic design. The concept of STEAM (Science - Technology - Engineering - Art - Mathematics), which is already firmly established in the English speaking world, will be brought more into focus in our primary school.

Our admissions procedures in detail

Register now for the 2024/2025 school year. Cross-entry into 1st grade in the 2023/2024 school year is still possible.

Nursery

1. Online registration

As a first step, parents fill out our non-binding registration form online. We then send a confirmation of receipt and our Admissions Team contacts the parents to discuss the next steps.

2. Parent Interview

After consulting with our nursery leadership team and depending on available places in the appropriate age group of the child, we will invite the parents to a meeting with our nursery leadership.

The invitation is made after a selection from the registered children according to the following criteria:

  • Siblings or transfer from another Phorms kindergarten.
  • Children growing up bilingually
  • Social and cultural diversity and balance between girls and boys
  • Registration date at Phorms Berlin

In a conversation with our nursery management, parents receive information about the conceptual and pedagogical work as well as about everyday life in the kindergarten.

3. Place Offer

After the interview, we select the children to whom we offer a kindergarten place based on the feedback from the nursery management and the criteria mentioned above. We send offers of places by e-mail.

4. Nursery Contract

After acceptance of the place offer, the parents receive a childcare contract by mail.

 Primary school

1. Online registration

As a first step, parents fill out our non-binding registration form online. We then send a confirmation of receipt and our Admissions Team contacts the parents to discuss the next steps. We may request additional information, certificates or documents.

2. Trial Days

Each child needs to go through our admission process which differs depending on the year group applied for. We want to get to know the children and learn more about their level of knowledge in the key subject areas and their language skills.
Children for the trial days for new grade 1 classes are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Siblings or switch from another Phorms school.
  • Children growing up bilingually
  • Social and cultural diversity and balance between girls and boys
  • Registration date at Phorms Berlin

During the testing for grade 1, the children solve age-appropriate tasks and play with other children of the same age whilst being supervised by some of our Year 1 teachers.
If applying for a school place in a higher grade, the child will visit the respective class for three to five trial days and participate in the regular school day. During the trial days, the parents also have an interview with our head of primary school to enable us to learn more about the family, the aims for their child and a possible cooperation with the school.

3. Place Offer

Given the approval of the teachers after the trial days, we offer selected children a place at our school. The place offers are sent out via email.

4. School Contract

Once the parents accept the place we send out the contract by post.

Only a few places available!

Contributions

Price models between 112€ and 782€ per month

In order to enable all children to attend our primary school, the fee is based on the total amount of the parents' income. Here are some examples of our pricing. The individual contribution is calculated in each case when the school contract is concluded.

Nursery

Contributions

For our care-intensive, bilingual concept in the kindergarten, we do not receive any additional state funding. This concept includes, in particular, English-speaking educators and staff who work in the kindergarten groups in addition to the legally required staffing ratio, further training in the area of bilingual education, individual support for the children and targeted preparation for school with its own courses and activities.

Since parents specifically choose Phorms because of the bilingual concept and especially want to support the increased care ratio, the association "Förderverein der Phorms-Kindertagesstätten Berlin e.V." was founded in April 2021. The sole purpose of the association is to provide the necessary financial means for the special concept in our nurseries. The supporting members thus secure the bilingual concept in our Berlin nurseries in the long term; nevertheless joining is voluntary for parents.

Fees are based on the annual income from two years before, (e.g. for the school year 2021/2022 we look at the income tax statement of 2019). The gross annual income includes all income from both legal guardians in that specific year. It is not possible to set off income against “negative income” (such as loss on rental income or leases).

As proof of parents’ income of up to 130,000 Euro p.a., we accept an income tax return – or if this document is not yet available – another suitable form of proof of income. If parents pay fees according to the highest income level, they do not have to submit any other documents.

Example reference points for the funding contribution are:

Gross annual income - Monthly tuition fees
less than 20,000 € 135 €
50,000 € 212 €
75,000 € 246 €
100,000 € 275 €
over 130,000 € 349 € (maximum rate)

The subsidy contribution is an annual contribution in twelve monthly installments, which first accrue at the beginning of the nursery year on August 1st of each year.

Admission fee
There is no admissions fee for Nursery and Reception. It will only be charged when a child transfers to the Primary School.

Sibling discount
Siblings receive a reduced membership contribution. For the first-born child the full membership contribution is due. The second-born child receives a reduction of 25% and for the third-born child the membership contribution is reduced by 50%. For the fourth-born child and any further siblings we offer a reduction of 75%. Requirement for the granting of the discount is the simultaneous attendance of all relevant siblings at a Phorms nursery/school in Berlin.

Kita-Gutschein
Our provider, Phorms Berlin gGmbH, receives financial support for childcare from the Berlin Senate as an independent youth welfare organization. Therefore, the legal guardians have to apply for a so-called "Nursery Voucher" (Kita-Gutschein) at their local district office (Bezirksamt).

The Nursery Voucher is free of charge for all children who are registered in Berlin. The costs for the Nursery Voucher for Brandenburg residents differ from those in Berlin. The local district office in Brandenburg will calculate the fees and will be able to provide further information.

Due to this arrangement with the Senat, we are only allowed to accept children at our Nursery who have a Kita-Gutschein. The conditions for obtaining a Kita-Gutschein are either that parents and children have their main place of residence in Berlin/Brandenburg, or parents have their main place of work in Berlin/Brandenburg.

Meals
As we offer a healthy range of meals including breakfast, lunch, afternoon snack and drinks, we charge an additional catering fee. The monthly fee is 70 Euros. This includes the 23 Euros in the cost allocation from the Kita-Gutschein, as well as the additional Phorms meal fee of 47 Euros. For children with a primary residence in Brandenburg the catering fee is 47 Euros. The charges for the lunch according to the Brandenburg cost allocation again differ from the 23 Euros. For exact details please contact your local Brandenburg district office.

Tax deductibility
The monthly contributions to the "Förderverein der Phorms-Kindertagesstätten Berlin e.V."may be deductible as special expenses in the context of the income tax return as care expenses in the amount of two thirds of the expenses, but not more than 4,000 Euros per child (§ 10 para. 1 no. 5 EStG special expenses). This does not apply to expenses for lessons, the teaching of special skills and for sporting and other leisure activities. The prerequisite for this is that the child lives in the taxpayer's household.

Phorms and the Förderverein do not assume any liability for this information. Please discuss any questions directly with your tax advisor.

from 50.000 € 535 €
from 80.000 € 569 €
from 130.000 € 782

Fees are based on the annual income from two years before, (e.g. for the school year 2021/2022 we look at the income tax statement of 2019). The gross annual income includes all income from both legal guardians in that specific year. It is not possible to set off income against “negative income” (such as loss on rental income or leases). As proof of parents’ income of up to 130,000 Euro p.a., we accept an income tax return – or if this document is not yet available – another suitable form of proof of income. If parents pay tuition fees according to the highest income level, they do not have to submit any other documents.

The tuition fee is an annual contribution which is paid in twelve equal monthly rates starting on August 1st of each year.

Admissions fee
The admissions fee is 2.5 times the monthly Phorms tuition fee, due when the enrolment contract is submitted to the school.

Sibling discount
Siblings receive reduced tuition rates. For the first-born child the full Phorms tuition fee is due. The second-born child receives a reduction of 25% and for the third-born child the Phorms tuition fee is reduced by 50%. For the fourth-born child and any further siblings we offer a reduction of 75%.

Loyalty Bonus
After 5 years at Phorms, parents will receive a loyalty bonus of 10% towards tuition fees starting in their sixth year. The loyalty bonus increases to 20% after 10 years. For students joining our Secondary School in Year 7 the loyalty bonus comes into effect after having completed four years at Phorms, e.g. starting in Year 11.

All-Day Care (Hort)
In our Primary School, we offer full before and after school care from 7.30 a.m. until 6 p.m. During the school day our educators assist in the classroom and afterwards they run after school activities and clubs. Therefore, all of our parents also sign an additional contract for the additional care alongside the primary school contract. This requires an application for a “Hortbescheid” (care voucher) which needs to be submitted to your local district office.

The Berlin Hortbescheid cost-sharing is to be paid in addition to the Phorms fee. The amount depends on income, the amount of care provided (from 1:30pm to 4:00pm or until 6:00pm) and the number of children in the family. The costs are determined by the local district office and are based on the Day Care Cost Sharing Act (Tagesbetreuungskostenbeteiligungsgesetz, TKBG). If, for example, only one child lives in the family and care is provided until 6:00 pm, the monthly contribution varies from 16 euros to 194 euros depending on income.

From the 2019-2020 school year, afternoon care vouchers for students in Years 1 and 2 will be free of charge. Parents must however still apply for the afternoon care with child and youth services (Jugendamt), as with the Kita daycare voucher. From Year 3 onwards, parents will need to make a contribution to the afternoon care voucher.

The costs for the Day Care Voucher for Brandenburg residents differ from those in Berlin. For further information please see your local Brandenburg district office. For any other questions please contact our Admissions Team or consult our information materials.

Catering
All Primary School children are entitled to a free lunch for which parents should register directly with the school caterer. The school caterer will be reimbursed by the Berlin senate.

Furthermore, children will receive additional food for which a Phorms fee of 28 Euros will be levied. For children with primary residence in Brandenburg, the additional meal fee is also 28 Euros. The costs for lunch are set by the Brandenburg Day Care Voucher and can be inquired from the local Brandenburg district office and paid there.

Once registered with the catering company, Gymnasium students can also receive a warm lunch. The costs for this are to be paid to the catering company directly.

Other fees
The costs for school supplies, the obligatory school uniform, field trips and class trips as well as voluntary afternoon activities are charged separately.

Tax Deductibility
Parental contributions for primary schools and secondary schools are deductible as school fees in the amount of 30% as special expenses in the context of the income tax return. This does not apply to fees for accommodation, child care and meals for the child. Since 2008, a tax-effective maximum amount of 5,000 Euros p.a. applies. This means that a maximum of 5,000 Euros (30% of 16,667 Euros) per parent per child is deductible as school fees (§ 10 para. 1 no. 9 EStG special expenses).

Day Care costs (and parent contributions to Nursery and Pre-School) may also be deductible. The child must live in the household. Two thirds of the child care expenses up to a maximum amount of 4.000 Euros per child may be deducted as operating costs when determining the gross family income.

Phorms Education cannot accept any liability for the accuracy of the above information. Parents should discuss all matters directly with their tax consultant.

Any questions?

Our FAQ at a glance

For admissions

Do the children in Year 1 have to be able to speak both languages?

No, but they should be fluent in at least one of the two languages of instruction (German OR English).

What are the admission criteria?

For Year 1, children must be developed according to their age and be fluent in one of our two languages of instruction (German OR English).

From Year 2 onwards, the students should be fluent in one of our two languages of instruction and have functional command of the other language (German and English), their previous school results must be in the good to very good range and they should enjoy learning English or German (whichever language in not their native tongue).

Do the children have to have already attended Phorms Preschool to get a place in Year 1?

No, although we reserve a place in the Primary School for all our Phorms preschoolers, they too must complete the admission procedure for the Primary School. About half of our school places are filled by Phorms preschoolers and the other half are allocated to external children.

What happens during the trial days for 1st grade? Can I prepare my child for it?

We observe the children with regard to our admission criteria (language behaviour, age-appropriate development, social behaviour). This is done in a playful way so that the children have an exciting time with us and do not feel any pressure to perform. No preparation is necessary. However, we do recommend that you visit one of our Open Days with your child in advance so that they get to know the campus and are not afraid of the unknown.

Are the parents present at the trial days?

No, we warmly welcome your child on the first trial day and would then like to get to know them alone.

When will we know if our child has been accepted?

Our teachers evaluate the results after the trial days and we give the parents feedback as soon as possible.

Can my child transfer from a state school to you at any time?

We teach according to the Berlin framework curriculum, so that a change in one or the other direction is possible at any time depending on the language skills. From Year 2 onwards, children must already speak German and some English in order to be accepted into our Primary School.

Do you also accept students in the middle of the school year?

This depends on the individual requirements and the year level. Please contact our Admissions Team.

Do you offer a separate admission process for families abroad?

This depends on individual prerequisites and grade level. Please contact ourAdmissions Team for more information.

Tuition fees

How much is the tuition fee?

The monthly contributions are based on the annual gross income of both legal guardians. The exact contributions can be found under School Fee Regulations.

My income is very low. Do you have different school fee regulations?

Yes, the normal school fee regulation is aimed at families with a gross income of 50,000 euros or more per year. For families below this income we offer the reduced tuition fee regulation. You can find the exact fees under School Fee Regulation.

I am afraid that if I ask for the reduced school fees, the chances of getting a place will be less. Do I have to?

No, admission is decided solely by the educators, who do not have information about your income at any time.

Lunch at Berlin elementary schools is free of charge. Why do you charge extra for meals?

We work with a caterer who provides students with a free lunch in the form of a flying buffet (choice of several main and secondary components, dessert or raw vegetables) as well as an afternoon snack.

What additional costs will I have to pay?

We charge a one-time administrative fee after the school contract is signed.

We also provide school materials, which we charge about 80,- Euro per year.

From grade 3 on, monthly after-school costs are added and the children go on school trips.

I do not need after-school care. Do I still have to submit an after-school care certificate?

Yes, at our open all-day school, all elementary school students need an after-school care certificate until at least 4 pm. For grades 1 & 2, after-school care is currently free of charge.

About school life

Do you have a school uniform?

Yes, we have a clothing collection from which all elementary school students must wear the tops and sportswear.

How many students are in a class?

Our benchmark is 24 children in elementary school.

Where do the English-speaking teachers come from?

From all English-speaking countries of the world.

What is the turnover like in the classes?

We teach mostly resident families, so we are very consistent in our student body.
